The Marx Brothers’ musical takes the stage at Playhouse 22 for the opening of our 44th Anniversary season. See   Groucho, Chico, and Harpo create pandemonium and hear some of the best music of the 1930’s in this hit show!        Directed by ANDREW GORDANIER

Nick is a single, Italian-American guy from NJ. His parents retired & moved to Florida. But he’s not all alone. In fact, he sees both sets of grandparents every Sunday for dinner. Until he has to tell them that he’s been offered a dream job, and that would take him away from his beloved, but annoying, grandparents. Thus begins a series of schemes to keep Nick around. A hilarious comedy from the author of “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change”.       Directed by AMY LEVINE

From writer Paul Rudnick (I HATE HAMLET, IN & OUT) comes the major stories of the Old Testament like you’ve never heard them before! Instead of Adam and Eve, our lead characters are Adam & Steve, and Jane & Mabel, a lesbian couple with whom they decide to start civilization. Act One covers the Garden of Eden, an ark, a visit with a highly rambunctious Pharaoh and finally even the Nativity. Act Two puts the same characters in a modern day setting, adds a wheelchair-bound, Jewish lesbian Rabbi from cable access TV, one-liners, epigrams, withering put-downs and flashing repartee & the comedy continues!       Directed by MARK KALET

The stage classic about a Southern lawyer’s defense of a black man wrongfully accused of a serious crime, and the lawyer’s daughter — a young girl who gets in the middle of the controversy it causes in her small town in 1935.       Directed by TONY ADASE

The quintessential guy group is brought back to life for one memorable evening to give the concert they never had the chance to perform.  A salute to the great music of the 1950's.  Directed by Howard Whitmore.

The Diary of Anne Frank --- October 26 - November 17, 2001

The classic award winning drama about the holocaust and Nazi persecution during World War II as recounted from the writings of a young Jewish girl's firsthand experiences. Directed by Jak Prince.

Working --- February 1 - February 23, 2002

The hopes, dreams, joys and concerns of the average working American are the focus of this musical revue, based on the best selling book by Studs Turkel. Directed & Choreographed by David Pacheco.

Sylvia --- April 12 - May 4, 2002

From the director of our hit production of A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM comes this touching comedy about how a stray dog changes the lives and priorities of a married couple and brings them to a new level of understanding. Directed by Mary Lynn Dobson.

Dorian --- June 7 - June 29, 2002

A New Jersey premiere of a musical based on the classic tale "THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY". Directed by Tony Adase.

Beyond Therapy --- July 19 - August 10, 2002

The director's debut solo directing job is this Christopher Durang ADULT COMEDY about therapy and love triangles. Directed by Mark Kalet.

Once Upon a Mattress --- September 8 - October 7, 2000  (No performances 9/29, 9/30 and 10/1)

The musical comedy classic about The Princess, The Pea, a dull Prince, his overbearing mother and a 20-mattress bed gets the royal treatment at Playhouse 22, hot on the heels of it's Broadway revival just a few seasons ago. A classic for theater goers of all ages. Directed & choreographed by David Pacheco.

The Food Chain --- October 27 - November 18, 2000

A comedy following the lives of a newly married woman, her husband, a male model, a widow who answers a "help line" and an overeating, obsessive 30-something momma's boy in New York and how they all intertwine, and eventually come together with hilarious results. Directed by Michael Driscoll.

Agatha Christie's Towards Zero --- March 2 - March 24, 2001

From the award winning director of  "Six Degrees of Separation" and "Noises Off" comes this classic mystery from the queen of suspense. Directed by Bob Gargiullo.

A Midsummer Night's Dream --- April 20 - May 12, 2001

William Shakespeare's classic comedy of mistaken identities and love gone awry comes to life on the Playhouse 22 stage. Directed by Ana Kalet.

The Rothschilds --- June 8 - June 30, 2001

Europe's most famous rags to riches story is the basis for this musical epic. Mayer Rothschild and his five sons build a banking business in 18th century Europe that takes them from the Jewish ghetto to the courts of the rich and powerful. On the way, they come to dominate European finance and fund Napoleon's defeat. Directed by Tony Adase.

Blithe Spirit --- July 20 - August 11, 2001

From the director of last season's production of "1776" comes Noel Coward's classic comedy about a husband haunted by the ghost of his first wife. Directed by Amy Levine.

The Playhouse 22 Season: 1996 - 1997

The 1996 - 1997 Season was one of our most popular. Playhouse 22 received the most A.C.T. (Achievements in Community Theatre) Award nominations of any theatre in New Jersey (13 nominations in all). Barefoot in the Park received 4 nominations, A Christmas Carol received 1 nomination, and Jeffrey received 8 nominations!

BAREFOOT in the PARK --- September 20 - October 12
Neil Simon's classic comedy about the trials and tribulations of a lawyer and his newlywed bride as they begin life together in a 5th floor walk-up in New York during the 1960's. Directed by Sandra Van Dyke.
ANYTHING GOES --- November 1 - November 23
Cole Porter's brilliant music and lyrics are the real stars of this "concert" version of the hit show, with an expanded orchestra and some of the best songs ever written for the American musical theatre! Don't miss tunes like "You're The Top", "I Get A Kick Out Of You", "Blow Gabriel Blow", "Friendship" and "Easy to Love". Direction & Choreography by Maury Herman.
THE ALL NIGHT STRUT --- December 31, 1996 --- One night only!
"Swing" in the New Year with this musical review showcasing the biggest swing hits of the 30's & 40's in the tight harmonic style of the Manhattan Transfer. "Java Jive", "In The Mood", "You're A Lucky Fellow Mr. Smith", "It Don't Mean A Thing...", etc., along with a fabulous meal and champagne toast at midnight! Direction and Choreography by Maury Herman.
THE CEMETERY CLUB --- February 7 - March 1, 1997
Another stage play which recently became a hit motion picture starring Olympia Dukakis and Gena Rowlands about 3 middle-aged women in Brooklyn, who find themselves dealing with being "single" again! Directed by Ray Dobrovolsky.
ANNIE WARBUCKS --- April 11 - May 3, 1997
In the long-awaited sequel to one of the most popular shows in Broadway history Annie and her fellow orphans try to find a wife for Daddy Warbucks so that he can legally adopt the red-headed moppet. Don't miss the further adventures of "ANNIE"! A musical in keeping with Playhouse 22's commitment to "family". Directed by John Mentor.
TWO BY TWO --- May 30 - June 21, 1997
The hit musical about Noah, the ark, the animals, the storm, and the first (& probably the most famous) "cruise" in history! Directed by Amy Levine.
JEFFREY --- Summer Production - July 1997
From Paul Rudnick, the author of "I Hate Hamlet", comes this off-Broadway hit play about an actor living in New York in the 90's. "A funny, touching play about sex as an invaluable form of human contact, and about the victory of love, friendship, and really great cashmere sweaters over death!" The play New York Magazine called "explicit, provocative, and hilarious." Directed by Joann Clark-Stein. Associate Producer - Jay Sundell.
